Name.Space to appeal NSI dismissal
By Bloomberg News Special to CNET News.com March 18, 1999, 11:15 a.m. PT URL: http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,33962,00.html NEW YORK--Domain name registration service Name.Space does not agree with the court's decision to dismiss the antitrust case against Network Solutions and intends to appeal, the company said in a statement. Name.Space says that Network Solutions (NSI), which has an exclusive contract with the government to assign Internet addresses, has used its position unfairly to control the market. In its statement, Name.Space said that the market for domain names is growing, and that the demand for new top-level domains, which currently include ".com," ".net," ".org," and ".edu," has been proven based on the thousands of user requests the company has processed since the start of its business in 1996. NSI's value skyrocketed last year. The company reported net revenues of $31.3 million for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 1998, a 117-percent rise over the previous year's results. Name.Space said its company lost its fair portion of revenues from domain name registration by being kept out of the market by NSI. Name.Space said it will continue to vigorously prosecute the case and seek appeal. If successful, the company will pursue its claim for treble damages under the antitrust laws.
